Doreen Adengo - Architect (Uganda)

The State of Design and Architecture at this particular moment is quite optimistic. Unlike many cities in the West which are much older and hence, most project are being renovations, here on the continent, there is much more potential to build our cities, despite there also being some challenges.
—Adengo Doreen

In episode 9 of the My African Aesthetic Podcast, we talked to Doreen Adengo; an Architect based in Kampala, Uganda where she runs an architectural firm called Adengo architecture. Much of Doreen’s work is focused on communicating the value of professional design services in African cities. In a context where non-designers often build their own homes, schools, and other structures, she believes that it’s critical to make the case that architects and urban planners can improve people’s everyday lives, helping cities develop sustainably. She completed her undergraduate and graduate studies at the Catholic University and Yale respectively, and has worked for design firms in London, Washington DC, and New York.

.

Doreen shares about her journey studying Architecture, how impactful it was to see/meet Architects of African descent and most importantly, how invaluable it was to have mentors who encouraged her along the way. In this episode she shares her thoughts and advice for students currently studying Architecture and how to approach the transition from school to professional practice.
